Gaurav tells Brahma he's gay

Today was another exciting episode on "Maryada".

Brahma came home to find Gaurav, Karan, Vidya, Devyani, Adi, and Priya standing in the hall. Gaurav told Brahma he wanted to talk to him and then told him that he was gay. Brahma said that he couldn't be gay because he was married to Vidya. Gaurav replied that his marriage to Vidya was a compromise. Brahma asked what Karan was doing there and Gaurav said that it is Karan that he loves. Brahma got angry and tried to strangle Gaurav.

After the family pulled Brahma off Gaurav, Brahma pretended to accept Gaurav and laid all the blame on Devyani for not telling him earlier and for poisoning the children's minds against him. He said that even the last time when he tried to shoot Gaurav, he was only angry that Gaurav had ruined Vidya's life. Adi believed him while the rest of the family was shocked.

Karan happily told Gaurav that now everything will be OK. Gaurav was still suspicious at how his dad's attitude could change so quickly, but Karan reminded him that his mom's attitude changed completely.

Adi yelled at Devyani and said he couldn't believe she would try to show his dad in a bad light. Priya tried to step in but he told her that she doesn't know his dad and that she has proved to be a good daughter-in-law for his mother but not for his father.

Brahma is very smart. He knew how to turn the tables on Devyani and make her look bad in front of the children so that when the news about the divorce comes out, the children will be on his side. He also thinks that maybe now Devyani will give up he idea of divorcing him. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Gaurav reveals his homosexuality to Vidya's parents

Tonight's episode was another milestone in the plot of "Maryada": Vidya's parents finally got to know that Gaurav is gay.

Adi, Priya and Gaurav rush back to the village in order to stop the tantric ritual that Vidya's parents are doing to help her become a mother. They reach there just as Vidya is about to walk barefoot on burning coals. Adi pulls her out of the way and everyone is angry with him for disturbing the ritual. Adi yells at them that what they are doing is wrong. Vidya's father says that they are doing it to wipe off Vidya's past sins so she can become pregnant and the Jhakkar family won't send her home permanently. Adi has had enough and demands that Gaurav tell the truth. Gaurav reveals that there's nothing wrong with Vidya and he can't give her a baby because he's gay. Vidya's father doesn't understand what this means. He asks "What kind of illness is this?" (When Gaurav's truth was first revealed to Vidya she also didn't understand what homosexuality was). Vidya's mother takes her husband away to explain to him.

Priya sympathizes with Gaurav and tells him that she doesn't believe he's a bad person. She understands the pressure on him, first for a marriage and then for a baby. She now understands why he was trying to get Vidya and Cheenu together.

Vidya's father comes back and slaps Gaurav, telling that he ruined Vidya's life to hide his own truth. Vidya defends Gaurav, telling her father that he is her husband and this is their internal matter. Her dad is shocked that even after all that has happened, Vidya is defending Gaurav. She is about to say something when she falls to the ground unconscious. Everyone rushes to take her to a doctor.

This was a very interesting episode. Vidya's father's reaction was perfectly natural and Gaurav deserved that slap. True to form, Vidya continued to defend her husband. It will be interesting to see whether they stay married or finally get divorced.

Subhankar tells Devyani that Brahma doesn't really want a divorce

Devyani goes to see her lawyer, Mr. Subhankar Singh Jaiswal, and he tells her that Brahma has no intention of giving her a divorce and it's just a strategy of his. Devyani is shocked and asks him how he knows this. SJ tells her that a man named Varma came to see him and asked him to drop all his other cases and take his case for whatever price he chooses. SJ found out that Varma was sent by Brahma and that Varma was the one who had threatened all the other lawyers in the town into refusing to take Devyani's case. Devyani doesn't understand why Brahma would do this as she knows he doesn't want to live with her. SJ tells her that no matter how well she thinks she knows her husband, he trusts his instincts.

The Jhakkar's are having dinner when Devyani gets home. Brahma asks her where she was and she tells him that she had gone to see her lawyer to make sure that all the paperwork was being completed properly: What would be Brahma's responsibilities after the divorce? How much would Devyani's share of the property be? Brahma gets up and leaves the table, saying he has some important work. Priya is surpised to see Devyani so happy and calm about the divorce, and asks her what happened. Devyani tells her that she was right and Brahma was never serious about the divorce.

Brahma is threatening Verma on the phone and telling him that this is his last chance to get the lawyer off his back. Unknown to him, Devyani and Priya overhear this conversation.

Doctor tells Vidya's mom that Vidya doesn't have relations with her husband

Recently on "Maryada", the plot has been focusing on Vidya and her failure to have a baby. Though the audience knows that the reason that Vidya has not become pregnant is because of Gaurav's homosexuality, the people in Vidya's village think that it is because Vidya is infertile. One of the villagers suggests to Vidya's mother that she take Vidya to a doctor so they can treat her. Vidya's father decides that this is a good idea and makes an appointment for her. When Vidya's mom finds out she suggests that they should ask Vidya first, but Vidya's dad gets angry and says that there's no need for that.

When Vidya finds out about the plan, she is very upset. She tells her mother that she knows Gaurav's truth (that Vidya and Gaurav don't have a husband-wife relationship). Vidya's mom says that she does but she can't tell Vidya's father. Vidya says that even if her father doesn't know Gaurav's truth, why does he automatically assume that she is the one that is infertile and not Gaurav. Vidya's mom tells her that society always blames the woman for a couple's failure to have a baby. Vidya says that this is an injustice and she refuses to go to the doctor.

Vidya tells her father that she will not go to the doctor. He yells at her and tells her that when a woman fails to have a baby, her in-laws send her to her parent's home forever, and he doesn't want Vidya to stay with them. He forces her to go to the doctor.

The doctor examines Vidya and then asks her if it's true that she hasn't had relations with her husband. Vidya tells her that it is, but begs her not to tell her mother. The doctor replies that she has to give a true report. She tells Vidya's mother that Vidya is a virgin and tells her that it isn't right to automatically blame the woman wihout knowing the whole situation. She adds that Vidya's absolutely fine and if there's a problem, it must be with her husband. Vidya's mom begs the doctor not to tell Vidya's father.

This is a very interesting track that raises important issues. In Indian society, the failure to have a baby is seen as the fault of the woman, even though it is possible for the man to be infertile. In Vidya's case, Gaurav can't give her a baby because he is gay. It will be interesting to see what will happen from here. In this day and age, a couple can have a baby without intercourse, through In vitro fertilization. Perhaps Gaurav will sleep with Vidya once so that she can get pregnant?

Aditya finds out about Karan

Adi goes to comfort Vidya who is upset about Cheenu and Gaurav's plan. She says to Adi that she did the same thing when she tried to get Gaurav and Karan together. Adi says "Karan? Who's Karan?" Vidya realizes she's said too much, but Adi gets her to tell him the whole truth. She tells him that Karan is Mantri Ji's son. Adi now understands why Karan was always hanging around Gaurav and why Gaurav and Karan went into business together.

Gaurav is on the phone with one of Karan's friends, asking him to take care of Karan. The friend tells him that Karan is drinking more and using drugs. He says that only Gaurav can save him. Gaurav replies that Karan won't see him.

Aditya confronts Gaurav about Karan and asks him how long their relationship has been going on. Gaurav tells him that he felt attracted to Karan the first time he saw him and wanted to be around him and to talk to him. Slowly they both realized that they love each other. Adi tells him that it's not his fault that he is the way he is. Gaurav asks if his being gay will make Adi hate him. Adi tells him not to be crazy. He already said that it's not his fault that he is gay and second he's his brother. He is upset about how Vidya was treated, but he's sure Gaurav will fix the situation.

Adi gets a call from Mantri Ji. He tells her he's about to go back to the village and she tells him she has a great idea. When he gets off the phone, Gaurav asks him what Mantri Ji said. Adi says that he thought Mantri Ji hated Gaurav, than why did she tell him that she wants the contract for the village development to be given to Gaurav's company? Gaurav and Adi become suspicious. Meanwhile, we see Mantri Ji telling herself that she kill two birds with one stone. Adi will go down and he will take Gaurav down with him.

The fallout from Cheenu's revelation

Today was another exciting episode that explored the consequences of Vidya finding about about Cheenu and Gaurav's plan. As expected, Vidya gave Cheenu a piece of her mind, telling him that he betrayed her friendship. She confided all her problems to him, thinking that he was her friend, but all the while he was thinking something else. She ordered him to never again say that he loves her. She also gave a piece of her mind to Gaurav telling him that he treated her like a toy, giving her to someone else when he got tired of her. She said that "If I am a toy, you should have left me in a corner. I would not have said anything but how could you even thinking of giving me to another man." Gaurav tries to explain, telling her that he wanted her to have the love he can't give her. Vidya is about to reply that she knows he can't love her because he's gay but stops herself because she realizes that Priya is there. She runs off and locks herself in her room. Gaurav tries to talk to her but she won't listen to him.

Gaurav tells Adi that Vidya knows everything about his and Cheenu's plan and he's worried she'll harm herself. Adi says that Vidya is sensible and won't do anything stupid. Gaurav tells Adi that he is responsible for all this, and if he hadn't married Vidya none of this would have happened. He should have told Adi about his sexuality earlier and then the two brothers would have worked something out and this marriage wouldn't have happened. Adi asks why he didn't tell him and Gaurav replies that he was afraid of losing him.

Meanwhile, Priya is comforting Cheenu, who now realizes that Vidya can never love him. He says he would never have dreamed of gaining her love if he had realized the pain he would feel when his eyes were opened.

Devyani arrives looking for Gaurav and Adi and Adi confronts her, telling her he can't believe that she could be so selfish that she got Gaurav married even after knowing about his homosexuality. How could she join his life with that of this innocent girl? Devyani is speechless.

Pre-cap: Gaurav tells Adi that their mother was afraid that if Brahma came to know Gaurav's truth, he would kill him. Adi doesn't believe his dad is capable of this and Devyani reveals that not only is he capable of it but he actually tried to do it. Seems like Adi is finally going to learn the truth about his dad.

Vidya finds out that Cheenu loves her

Today was an episode that we've all been a waiting for. Finally, Vidya finds out about Cheenu's feelings for her and Gaurav's plan to give her happiness by setting her up with Cheenu.

The family is celebrating Gaurav and Vidya's marriage anniversary. Cheenu can't take it anymore and decides he has to tell Vidya about his feelings. Priya orders him to do no such thing. Then she runs to find Aditya to tell him to stop Cheenu.

Cheenu asks Vidya if she wants to know who the girl he loves is. She says yes and he says that for that she has to go to his room. Priya finds Adi and tells him what is going on but he says that he can't do anything about it. She asks him why he's upset and he says that it's nothing but even if there was something he can't tell her. She asks why he can't share it with her and he says that he knows there are things she is keeping from him. Priya runs off to find Cheenu.

Priya goes to the room where the party is and asks Gaurav where Cheenu and Vidya are. He doesn't know where either of them are. Cheenu is looking at what looks like a photo frame (but is actually a mirror) and is about to tell Vidya the truth when Priya bursts in and says "Vidya, don't take Cheenu the wrong way! He loves you but it's not his fault. It's what Gaurav wants!". Vidya doesn't understand and takes the "photo" from Cheenu's hands and says "But Cheenu loves this girl..". She looks at the photo and realizes that it's actually a mirror and that she sees her face. She looks again and sees Gaurav's face. She turns around and asks Gaurav to ask Priya and Cheenu why they are saying such things and she knows its not true. Gaurav doesn't say anything and she can tell by the look on his face that what Priya was saying is true. She flashes back in her mind to all the times when Gaurav seemed to be trying to push her and Cheenu together.

This was a very important episode as finally one of the important revelations occurred. I'm sure Vidya will be very angry about the plot and will tell Cheenu that she can't love him and that she won't leave Gaurav. Gaurav will try to convince her otherwise, but I'm sure it will be an uphill task.

Devyani tells Brahma she will give him a divorce

Devyani is waiting for Brahma to come home so that she can convince him not to divorce her. She is lighting candles and creating a romantic atmosphere in the room. Meanwhile, Brahma and Uttara are romancing in his office at the police station.

Devyani sees Uttara and Brahma coming home together and changes her mind about the divorce. She clears away the candles and the flowers and sits down on the bed with the divorce papers. When Brahma enters he says "So you've received the papers? Now what are you going to do?" Devyani tells him that whatever needs to be done will be done by her lawyer and that this divorce should happen as soon as possible. Brahma is shocked and asks her if she wants a divorce. She says that he is the one that wants the divorce and she is willing to give it to him. He tells her to go give the family the "good news". She says that he should be the one to tell them because he is the one who wants to divorce her and get remarried. She asks him if he has any problem telling the family. He blusters, "No of course not". However, we know that he does not want to destroy his reputation in front of Adi.

Mahaepisode: Aditya finds out Gaurav is gay

Today was the long-awaited Mahaepisode in which Aditya finds out about Gaurav's homosexuality.

Brahma and Adi bring Gaurav home and everyone is relieved to see him and shocked at how hurt he is. The doctor comes to see Gaurav. At dinner, Cheenu asks where Vidya is and is told that she's refusing to leave Gaurav's side. Cheenu says that they should take her food to her bedroom. Priya looks at him suspiciously and says that she will do it. She takes the food to Vidya and when Vidya tells her she's not hungry, she replies "Not eating is neither going to lessen your regret or help Gaurav get better". Vidya doesn't understand what Priya is trying to imply.

Later at night, Adi and Priya can't sleep because they are worried about what Cheenu told them. Priya says that her brother doesn't lie but Adi can't understand why Gaurav would encourage Cheenu and Vidya's relationship. Cheenu goes into Vidya's room and puts a blanket over her. When he comes out, he meets Adi. Adi tells him he knows that he's falsely accusing Gaurav and that he wants him to be gone from the house by morning. Gaurav overhears this and tells Adi that Cheenu isn't going anywhere and that he wanted him to get close to Vidya. Adi can't understand why he would do this and he wants Gaurav to explain. At this point, Vidya comes out of the room and says that the doctor told Gaurav to rest and they can discuss the issue in the morning.

The next morning Gaurav is trying to call Karan when Priya brings in his breakfast. She tells him that just because he can't fulfill his responsibilities towards Vidya, he shouldn't have involved her younger brother his schemes. Gaurav tells her that Cheenu was already in the middle and that he loves Vidya. Priya replies that Cheenu is a child and he doesn't know what love is. Gaurav tells her to leave.

Gaurav is leaving the house to go see Karan when Adi catches him. He tells him that this time he won't let Gaurav go anywhere without knowing the whole truth. Gaurav tells him that he can't love Vidya, in fact he can't love any woman because he's gay. Adi doesn't believe him and asks for the real reason. Gaurav tells him that this is the real reason.

This was a very interesting episode. I'm really starting to dislike Adi though. Once he found out that Cheenu was telling the truth, he should have stayed out of Gaurav's personal issues. It's not really any of his business what is going on between Gaurav, Vidya and Cheenu. On the one hand he is so clueless and on the other hand he thinks its his right to know everything. I'm a little more sympathetic to Priya because Cheenu is her younger brother so she is just looking out for his best interest.

Anyway, its good that someone besides Devyani and Vidya knows about Gaurav's homosexuality. It'll be interesting to see what the repercussions are of Adi's knowing.

Aditya finds out that Cheenu loves Vidya

Today was another action-packed episode of "Maryada", gearing up for tomorrow nights Mahaepisode.


Priya confronts Cheenu about his love for Vidya, telling him to either stop pursuing Vidya or to leave the house because if Adi finds out what is going on, Priya will be in an impossible situation, torn between her brother and her husband and it will make it difficult for her to stay with her in-laws. Cheenu tells her that he's not afraid of anyone and that he loves Vidya. Adi overhears this conversation.

Priya tells Cheenu not to say anything else and tries to defuse the situation. However, Cheenu tells Adi "I said exactly what you heard." Adi hits him and tells him "how dare you even think this way about my sister-in-law!". He warns him that when Gaurav finds out Cheenu will be in big trouble. Priya tries to defend Cheenu by saying that Vidya is responsible as well. However, Cheenu says that Vidya doesn't even know that he loves her and that if anyone is responsible, it is Gaurav who wants him to get close to Vidya. Adi tells him to explain, but Cheenu says that he can't tell them Gaurav's reasons. At this point, Juggi comes to tell Aditya that Brahma is on the phone with someone and that they might know where Gaurav is.

Meanwhile, we find out that Gaurav is being held by Mantriji's PA. The PA tells Gaurav that "I have kidnapped you because you caused pain to Mantriji, who is like a mother to me, and to Karan, who is like my brother. So now I will cause pain to you". The PA gets a call from Mantriji, who wonders where he is. He tells her he's on his way, but she hears Gaurav's voice in the background. The PA finally tells her that he's holding Gaurav. She is shocked but tells him to tell her where he is and she will come and take care of the situation. At this point, she sees that Karan has come back home. She swears to him that she had nothing to do with the PA's plan and a drunk Karan is led to his room.

Brahma and Adi arrive at the location where Gaurav is being held where some police officers are already waiting for them. The PA finds out that the police are there and tries to escape with Gaurav. Gaurav fights him off. Adi finds the hiding place, breaks open the door and sees Gaurav lying on the floor. The PA manages to run off. Some police officers go after him.


This was a great episode that really set the stage for tomorrow. It is funny though how clueless Priya and Adi are. Priya has been so busy keeping track of Brahma and Uttara that she has no idea what is going on with her sister-in-law. Based on what she has observed she thinks that Cheenu and Vidya are having an affair and that is why Gaurav is gone missing. Adi is even more clueless, having no idea that his brother is gay or what is actually going on between Vidya and Gaurav. It will definitely be exciting to see how Adi reacts to Gaurav's truth.

Gaurav is missing

Today was another action-packed episode of "Maryada".


After Karan rejected Gaurav and Mantri Ji threw him out the house, Gaurav was distraught. He told Vidya that he had ruined two lives (hers and Karan's) and he didn't deserve to live. She tried to reason with him but then the phone went dead. Vidya panicked and told Cheenu what was going on and the two set out to look for Gaurav only to get caught by Devyani while trying to leave the house. Vidya finally told the whole story to Devyani and the three of them went in search of Gaurav.

Devyani goes to ask Mantri Ji for help since she was the last person to have seen Gaurav. However, Mantri Ji hasn't forgotten the incident when she went to Devyani to ask her to help get Gaurav and Karan back together and was rebuffed. She throws Devyani's words back in her face, telling her that she wishes she could help but she has to take care of her own son.

Vidya and Cheenu arrive at the bypass road looking for Gaurav and they find Gaurav's car in a bad condition. However, there is no sign of Gaurav. Devyani also arrives. Vidya is really distraught and is convinced that something horrible has happened to Gaurav. They take her home, give her a sedative and put her to sleep. The rest of the family finds out that Gaurav's missing and Bauji registers a missing person report with the police.

Meanwhile, Cheenu tells a sleeping Vidya that he loves her, only to be overheard by Priya. Priya confronts Cheenu, telling him that Vidya is her sister-in-law and since he's her brother, by extension she is his sister-in-law as well. Plus, she's a married woman and older than him. Cheenu says that it doesn't matter if she's older than him and he still loves her. Also, her marriage to Gaurav isn't really a marriage but a compromise. Priya thinks that Gaurav is missing because Cheenu and Vidya have been having an affair. She can't believe that Cheenu would sleep with a married woman or that Vidya would cheat on her husband. Cheenu tells her to trust him and that nothing like that has happened. He says it would be better if Vidya and Gaurav separate. Priya asks "Why? So your path would be cleared?"

Pre-cap: The police call Devyani and tell her that they have found a body that matches Gaurav's description and that someone needs to come and verify if it is him.

Gaurav finds Karan

So Today was another action-packed episode revolving almost entirely around Karan and Gaurav.

Gaurav goes to some club looking for Karan. He confronts another guy who tells him "Karan doesn't need someone selfish like you in his life, because now he has me". He tells Gaurav to get lost and they get into a fight. A waiter finally tells Gaurav where Karan is and when Gaurav finds him he is shocked.

Gaurav brings Karan to Mantri Ji's house. Karan is clearly drunk and unconscious. Mantri Ji and her PA help Gaurav put Karan to bed. Vidya calls and asks if Gaurav has found Karan. He tells her he has but that Karan is in bad shape. Vidya tells him to pull himself together because he isn't strong who will take care of Karan. Gaurav promises he will be strong.

Karan wakes up and tells Gaurav to leave and that he has no right to interfere in his life and that their relationship is over. Gaurav protests that Karan is not in his senses. Mantri Ji has Gaurav thrown out of the house.

Gaurav is on the phone with Vidya who is trying to reassure him. He says that he is a horrible person who has ruined two lives (Vidya's and Karan's) and that he doesn't deserve to live. The phone disconnects. Vidya panics and runs to Cheenu's room for help.

Precap: Cheenu is consoling Vidya while Priya looks on, clearly suspicious of their relationship.

Bauji finds out that Uttara and Brahma plan to get married

Uttara is in her room fantasizing about Brahma and she says aloud that she can't wait for the day that she is Mrs. Brahmanand Jhakkar. Bauji overhears her saying this and gives her a piece of his mind. He tells her that she should stop dreaming such dreams and she should have died before planning on destroying her older sister's marriage. Uttara tells him that it's not a dream and that Brahma himself proposed marriage to her and that he is planning to divorce Devyani. She also tells him that Brahma means everything to her and she will not let anyone destroy her life. Bauji responds, "Who's going to destroy your life, Uttara? You yourself are traveling on the path of destruction."

Bauji goes to Devyani's room where she is unpacking suitcases. He says that she must be feeling great pain. She tries to play this off and pretend everything is alright, but he tells her that Uttara told him everything.

I wonder what will happen now that Bauji knows about Brahma's plan to marry Uttara. I'm sure he will not let Brahma divorce Devyani. Perhaps he will help Devyani to throw Uttara out of the house?

Brahma tells Devyani that he's going to divorce her and marry Uttara

So, today was the climax of the Karva Chauth track and we finally find out what the story has been building up to. Brahma wanted Devyani to keep the fast for him so that he could humiliate her and tell her that he is going to give her a divorce and this is the last time she will perform these rituals as his wife.

While breaking her fast, Brahma tells Devyani that this is the last year she will perform the Karva Chauth rituals for him as he is going to give her a divorce. Devyani is shocked and begins to choke on the water she is drinking. Everyone rushes to her side and Brahma says he will take her home.

They arrive back at Vidya's house. Uttara opens the door eager for Brahma to break her fast. She is taken aback when she sees him with Devyani. Brahma tells her that he has come to break her fast. Uttara performs the rituals while Devyani sadly looks on. Then Brahma asks Uttara to marry him and says that this is another reason why he wants a divorce from Devyani. He will give her one month to figure out how to tell the family and where she will go afterwards, but at the end of the month she will no longer be Mrs. Jhakkar and he and Uttara will be married. Devyani runs out crying.

Uttara comes to console Devyani. She tells her that she never thought that this would happen and she didn't want this to happen. She hopes that Devyani will eventually forgive her. Devyani slaps her.

This action was completely expected from someone like Brahma. The most humiliating thing he could do to Devyani was to break her sister's fast right in front of her and then ask her to marry him. Even Uttara was shocked and felt bad for her sister, though in her case it is too little, too late. What did she think was going to happen when she started having an affair with her sister's husband? That the two sisters would share a husband? That he would continue carrying on with her while giving Devyani the status of his official wife. Clearly, one of them was going to have to go.

It will be interesting to see how this track develops. How will Brahma explain the divorce to the family, particularly to Adi(who thinks that his parents have the perfect marriage)? Will Uttara realize what she has done and refuse to marry him?

Devyani calls Uttara Brahma's "mistress"

Today on "Maryada":

Today, the Karva Chauth proceedings officially began. Uttara got up early in the morning to secretly eat the pre-fast meal so that she could fast for Brahma. Just as she is about to do so, Devyani catches her. She asks her what she thinks she's doing and Uttara replies "Keeping the fast for my husband". Devyani tells her that she won't let her do that. They argue and finally Devyani tells Uttara that her thinking she's Brahma's wife and carrying out the rituals doesn't make it true. She tells her "You know what society calls a woman who is carrying out an affair with a married man. His mistress. That's what you are". Uttara is shocked and says "No, I'm not his mistress, I'm his wife." Devyani replies, "Really? So can you openly break your fast like a wife?" Uttara has no response to that. At this point Vidya's mom comes in and tells Uttara that she can't eat that particular dish as it is meant for the married women to carry out their rituals. Uttara gets upset and leaves.

Uttara's character is getting more and more insufferable every day. She actually has the gall to carry out the Karva Chauth rituals not only in front of her sister but in the home of her nephew's in-laws. If anyone asides from Devyani and Priya found out what she's up to it would cause major embarrassment for the whole family. Hopefully the creatives are setting Uttara up for a huge fall because she has gone completely crazy.

Vidya asks Gaurav to spend just one night with her

Today on "Maryada":

Vidya comes upon Adi and Priya being intimate and is distraught about what she is missing in her own marriage. She runs to Gaurav and begs him to spend just one night with her, telling him "You know how much I love you. I know that you don't love me but please give me just one night". Gaurav is shocked and tells her that he can't do this and he doesn't deserve her love. Vidya runs away in tears.

Later, Gaurav is talking to Cheenu and asks him he has thought any more about his decision. Cheenu says that Vidya doesn't even look at him and that she only loves Gaurav. Gaurav replies that Vidya only thinks she loves him and he can never make her happy. Cheenu tells him that maybe he's right, but if he wants Vidya to move on than he has to cede his place in her life to someone else and go back to Karan. Gaurav says he can't do that. Cheenu asks him to think about it.

I again felt so bad for Vidya. Her pain at witnessing Adi and Priya's romantic moment and realizing that she can never have that in her own marriage and her utter desperation in begging Gaurav for one night was so touching. I feel bad for Gaurav as well because as much as he wants Vidya to be happy, the physical aspect of marriage is something that he just can't give her. It looks the writers have decided against turning Gaurav bisexual and that the Vidya-Gaurav marriage will have to end sometime.

Brahma tells Uttara that Devyani is his only and real wife

Today on "Maryada":

So, today was a completely action-packed episode. Pushing the Gaurav-Vidya-Karan-Cheenu stuff the background, today's episode focused on the Brahma-Devyani-Uttara track.

Yesterday Devyani had told Brahma that since he had given someone else (Uttara) the status of wife, she was not going to keep a fast for his long-life on Karva Chauth . Brahma went into Uttara's room and took the box of sindoor (vermillion powder that women put in the part of their hair to signify that they are married). The next morning, Uttara is looking for the sindoor and can't find it, so she goes to Devyani's room where she sees Brahma telling Devyani that he's sorry for his mistakes and only she is his legitimate wife. He goes to put the sindoor in Devyani's hair but Uttara stops him. He pushes her away and says that Devyani is his only wife and she has rights over not just the box of sindoor but over him as well. Uttara runs out of the room in tears.

Devyani tells Brahma that she doesn't trust him and he's doing all this because of some plan of his own. He tries to convince her that he really has changed.

Brahma goes to see Uttara and finds her packing. She says that she is leaving the house forever. He tells her that it's her decision but if she leaves, he'll never see her again, and that if she really loves him, she will trust him and that he's doing all this for a good reason.

I'm beginning to feel bad for Uttara Maasi. Although she has brought a lot of this on herself, and nothing justifies sleeping with her sister's husband, what Brahma did today was really humiliating. It's just incredible that after everything Brahma does, Uttara keeps taking him back. What is it about this man that he has Uttara completely under his thumb and that even Devyani though she talks tough, still loves him (as she told Priya, despite telling Brahma that she wasn't going to fast for him, she still plans to keep the fast in secret. As she said "I've fasted for him for thirty years, how can I stop doing it now?" This track is certainly getting interesting.

Vidya-Gaurav SMP

Today on "Maryada":

After their conversation in which Gaurav asks Vidya if she doesn't miss having love and physical affection in her life, she has a dream in which she is intimate with Gaurav. Of course she then wakes up to find herself alone in the bed while Gaurav is sleeping on the couch. She realizes that it was all a dream.

I felt really bad for Vidya in this scene. Despite claiming that she has accepted her husband's homosexuality and is happy just to play the role of wife, it is clear that she is still holding out hope that Gaurav will one day come to love her romantically. What do the writers intend by showing this scene? Obviously Vidya craves affection and has sexual needs but she is in love with Gaurav and I don't see her getting into a relationship with Cheenu just because he can satisfy her needs. Are the writers planning to turn Gaurav bisexual at some point in the future?

Gaurav asks Cheenu if he loves Vidya

Today on "Maryada":

Gaurav asks Cheenu (Priya's younger brother) if he is in love with Vidya. Cheenu tells him that's it's none of his business and he only wants him to say yes so he has another excuse to get rid of Vidya. He tells him that if he cared so much about Vidya, he would never have married her in the first place. Gaurav replies that that is true and he only got married because he was afraid of the truth of his homosexuality being exposed. Because of this one mistake, three lives (His, Karan's and Vidya's) have been ruined, and Vidya's most of all, even though she was completely innocent in the whole thing. He asks Cheenu to think about it and only say yes if he can stand by Vidya forever as he can't bear to see her heart broken again.

Later, Gaurav talks to Vidya and tells her that she shouldn't fast on Karva Chauth (a Hindu ritual in which women fast throughout the day for their husband's long life). She tells him that she thought they weren't going to interfere in each other's affairs. He apologizes for yelling at her and tells her that he understands why she did it. He then asks her if she has never longed for love, for someone to take her in his arms and love her? She tells him that she is happy and doesn't want anything more. He replies "You can lie to me, but why are you lying to yourself".

This storyline raises some important issues. Clearly, Gaurav feels guilty that he cannot give Vidya a husband's love and he wants her to find her happiness with someone else. Cheenu loves Vidya and would be a great husband for her. However, Vidya is completely in love with Gaurav and doesn't view Cheenu in a romantic way at all. As such it would be unfair to ask her to marry Cheenu. It would solve Gaurav's problem and Cheenu would be happy, but it wouldn't make Vidya happy. And though she says she is content to play "wife" with Gaurav, we know that she hopes that it will one day become a real marriage.

Pre-cap: Gaurav and Vidya's suhag raat (wedding night). Obviously this is Vidya's fantasy, as there's no logical way that he would suddenly turn straight.

Vidya tries to get Gaurav and Karan back together

Today on "Maryada":

Vidya cannot bear Gaurav's pain at being apart from Karan so when she overhears him telling a client to meet him at the Garden Cafe at 1:00 she decides to send a message to Karan from Gaurav's phone asking him to meet him there.

When Gaurav arrives at the cafe is surprised to find Karan waiting for him. He asks him who he is there to meet and Karan replies that he's there to meet him. Gaurav says that he didn't send the message to him. Then Vidya appears and says that she sent the message because she wanted Gaurav and Karan to get back together. Karan thinks that they are making fun of him and turns to go but Vidya begs Gaurav not to let Karan go out of his life. Gaurav however tells Karan that he's sorry that his wounds got opened again, but he should go and hopefully he will eventually forgive him. Karan replies that he will never forgive Gaurav.

Gaurav gets angry at Vidya and asks her why she keeps interfering in his life. She says she can't bear to see the pain he is in when he is separated from his love and he replies "What about my pain? The pain I feel when I see your loneliness. Before worrying about my happiness can't you find love for yourself?"



I don't know where the creatives are going with this plot. Vidya seems so confused. First she refuses to leave Gaurav and promises to stay on as the daughter-in-law of the house and his "wife". This makes Gaurav feel guilty that she is sacrificing so much for him and he decides to break up with Karan. Now that they've broken up, she wants them to get back together. The plot seems to keep going around in circles. If Gaurav and Karan are supposed to end up together, than it would have made sense for the writers to have Vidya go home with her parents and divorce Gaurav. If Gaurav and Vidya are supposed to end up together, than Gaurav and Karan's breakup has to be final. We can't keep going round and round the same issues.

Aditya suggests that Uttara get remarried

Today on "Maryada":

After Uttara refused to believe Devyani and continued to carry on her affair with Brahma, Priya decided that something needs to be done. She convinces Aditya that he should talk to the family about arranging a second marriage for Uttara. This is controversial, because in Orthodox Hinduism, widow remarriage is not permitted. Priya convinces Adi that Maasi is still young and needs a life-partner and no matter how much she tries to become part of her sister's family, she needs her own family as well.

At dinner, Adi tells his dad that he thinks that they should get Maasi remarried. Needless to say, everyone is shocked, and Uttara and Brahma are both very against it.


Precap: Brahma tells Deyvani that he knows what she's up to and he won't let this plan succeed. Deyani tells him that she should explain it to Adi then and tell him just exactly why he is so against this marriage or Adi won't understand why "his super-cool dad is being so narrow-minded".

Vidya finds out that Gaurav has broken up with Karan

Today on "Maryada":

Vidya finds out that Gaurav has broken up with Karan. She hears Devyani and Gaurav talking and picks up something regarding Karan. She asks Gaurav if everything is OK, but he fobs her off with something regarding business troubles. When Gaurav goes out of the room, she uses his phone to call Karan. Karan, thinking it's Gaurav, picks up, and when he finds out that it's Vidya on the line, he asks her what she wants now that he and Gaurav have broken up. He thanks her for saving Gaurav's life and asks her to take care of him. He also asks to be left alone. When Gaurav comes back inside, Vidya confronts him about it and tells him he should go back to Karan and that she won't accept such a big sacrifice from him. Gaurav tells her that he doesn't want to argue with her about it and that he did what felt right to him, just as she did what felt right to her when she decided to stay married to him.

It seems a little for Vidya to be stage-managing her husband's love life. First she was very upset that he was with Karan, and now that they've broken up she's upset that they're not together. I get that she just wants Gaurav to be happy and she knows that he won't be happy without Karan, but she doesn't understand that he feels incredibly guilty about how much she has sacrificed for him. He can't stay married to Vidya and continue seeing Karan on the side, and he's now committed to trying to make this marriage work-- He will lose in either situation. Gaurav is also right when he says to Vidya "don't come between me and Karan" and she is also right in her way when she says that "I have come between you. Don't break up with him for me".

Meanwhile, Mantri Ji vows to get revenge on the Jhakkars for making her lose Karan: On Bhrama for shooting Vidya, on Devyani for not telling Gaurav to go back to Karan, and on Gaurav for breaking up with Karan. She says that just as she has lost her son, she's going to make the Jhakkar's lose a son so that they will understand her pain. I wonder if she's going to go after Gaurav or try to do something to Adi?

Devyani tells Uttara the truth

Today on "Maryada":

Devyani is finally forced to tell Uttara the truth about Brahma. Baoji has found out that there's something going on between Uttara and Brahma and he's told Devyani that she better put a stop to it or he will throw Uttara out of the house. Devyani begs him not to do that and says that she will talk to her sister. She goes to talk to Uttara and tells her the truth, saying "If you think that after me, you're the first woman in his life you are wrong." She tells Uttara about the affairs, the abuse, everything and says that she only didn't speak up earlier because whatever he was doing, he was doing it outside the house, but now that it's come into the house and is impacting the family she's forced to speak out. However, Uttara doesn't believe her and thinks that Devyani is lying just to get her to end her relationship. Devyani is about to tell her about Brahma's attempted rape of Priya, but Uttara refuses to hear anymore. She says that if Brahma were truly so bad, she would have seen some hint of it because the truth always comes out. Devyani says "I'll wait for that day Uttara when his truth is revealed in front of you".

Uttara's character is irredeemable. I thought that once she heard the truth from her sister, she would be convinced of the need to end her affair and help Devyani in getting revenge on Brahma. Instead, her jealousy of her sister and her "love" for Brahma cause her to keep her blinders on. How strange is it that she would consistently pick Brahma over her own blood sister?

Gaurav breaks up with Karan

Today on "Maryada":

Gaurav decides that since Vidya has sacrificed so much more him, he has to be a a good husband to her. He decides to break up with Karan. He calls him and tells him he has to meet him urgently at the office. When he gets there, Karan asks him what was so important and Gaurav tries to explain. Before he can even say anythng, Karan guesses the truth and asks "Did you call me here to tell me that you want to end our relationship?" Gaurav is sad but explains that since Vidya has given up so much for him, he feels that staying with Karan would be selfish. To his surprise, Karan says he is doing the right thing.

Meanwhile, Karan's mom has tried everything to "cure" her son's homosexuality, up to and including calling in a holy man to perform a puja for him. When Karan finds out what his mom is trying to do, he is very upset and storms out. Mantri Ji decides that she has to go ask Devyani (Gaurav's mom) for help.

Gaurav decides to "ungay" himself for Vidya

Today on "Maryada":

Gaurav feels guilty about what Vidya has been through and decides that although he can't give her a husband's love, he can fulfill his "farz" (duty). Although he still loves Karan and won't be able to forget him, he feels that if he has to sacrifice his love for Vidya's happiness, he is willing to do that.

The scene between Gaurav and Vidya when he was changing her bandage was so tender and even romantic in a way, even though he is supposed to be gay. I hope the writers decide to make him bisexual so that he can be with Vidya not only because of guilt but also because of love. He already loves her in all but the sexual aspects. Previously, he used to see her as an obstacle standing between him and Karan but now that she has made so many sacrifices for him, he sees how much she really loves him. And this after she told him that she only wants his happiness and does not want to "trap him in the bonds of marriage" and if he's happy with Karan, he should be with him and she will just continue to play wife.

It's going to be interesting what happens in the future. It's an Indian serial, so there's no reason why the lead can't degay himself, even if that's very unrealistic. Here's hoping guilt and affection lead to something else.

Vidya refuses to leave Gaurav

On yesterday's episode, Vidya's parents told Gaurav that they had decided to take her home with them when she got out of the hospital, and that she would now never return to her in-laws.Gaurav was shocked but couldn't say no to them as he feels that he can never make Vidya happy.

However, today when Vidya found out her parents' decision, she refused to go back with them. She asked them why no one has ever asked her what she wanted or considered her feelings. When she begged to be allowed to stay in her father's house, he forcibly pushed her out of the door and told her that a woman's place is in her husband's home. Now that she wants to stay with her husband, her parents have decided to take her home. She said "Aren't I a human being? I am not a piece of luggage to be moved from here to there."

Vindhya's acting was very powerful today. She could barely breathe and get the words out, but she had to have her say and passionately declare that she would remain with her husband. I loved the way Gaurav looked at her when he told her that whatever she wanted would happen. Vidya loves Gaurav so much despite the fact that he has caused her so much pain. And Gaurav, despite being gay and unable to love Vidya the way a husband should love his wife, truly does care about her and feels incredibly guilty about the pain that he has caused her. He was willing to let her go, because he knew how unhappy she was, despite the fact that if his marriage breaks down than questions about his sexuality will come up again. I'm excited to see where this track goes from here.

Devyani Confronts Uttara

On Today's episode, Devyani finally confronted Uttara about having an affair with her husband. Uttara had gone to take food to Brahma in jail, something that his wife should have done. When she came back home, she was surprised to find Devyani waiting for her. Deyvani told her that she should stop what she is doing. "You are my sister. Act like a sister. Don't try to become my co-wife." She also told her that both her husband and sister betrayed her, but "He is my husband and a man. You are my own blood sister. Did you feel no shame in destroying your sister's house?" Finally, she told her that if she does anything to bring shame on Devyani's family than Devyani will forget that she is her sister.

Uttara was shocked and distraught by this confrontation and the revelation that her sister knew about her betrayal. She remembered all the things Devyani had done for her such as helping her deal with her abusive husband. Though the writers are trying to elicit sympathy for Uttara by showing that she feels bad about what she has done, it is kind of difficult to feel sympathy for a woman who would knowingly sleep with her sister's husband, no matter how much he manipulated her or how horrible her past. At this point Uttara deserves everything she is getting from Devyani.

Vidya regains consciousness

So the most important thing that happened on today's episode was that Vidya regained consciousness. The interaction between Gaurav and Vidya when she woke up was so beautiful. The first thing she said on regaining consciousness was to ask Gaurav if he was alright, and Gaurav's response was "I'm alright because of you". The way he kept touching her face was so tender and showed how much he cares for her and how relieved he was that she'll be Ok. I'm getting the feeling that this is going to be the beginning of a new chapter in Gaurav and Vidya's relationship.


Vidya asked Gaurav if anyone had found out anything. He told her that the police are making inquiries and the truth has to come out. Vidya begged him to keep the truth within the family and tell the police that the shooting was an accident. He asked her if she wanted him to forgive his father and she replied that perhaps that would be the best thing to do.

Vidya comes back from the dead

So today was yet another drama-packed episode (one of the best ever I think)!

At the conclusion of yesterday's episode, it seemed as though Vidya had died from her gunshot wound. Her pulse had gone to zero and the doctor had given up hope. Yet Gaurav refuses to accept that she is dead and speaks directly to her and tells her that she cannot leave him. He tells her that once he himself had tried everything to get her out of his life and now he is telling her that she must come back. And lo and behold, she does! While this is completely unrealistic (no dead person is suddenly revived like this), it was carried of in the best soapy manner.

Dakssh's (Gaurav's) acting was amazing today. We saw all Gaurav's emotions cross his face--his despair at losing Vidya, his regret at the way he treated her in the past, his determination not to lose her again. It was truly chilling the way he kept trying to get the supposedly dead Vidya to respond, telling her that she had to listen to him. Perhaps the creatives are trying to make Gaurav realize how much he loves Vidya and pave the way for turning the character bisexual? We'll have to wait and see.



Another thing to note today was Adi's dialogue with his dad. No matter how much Bhramanand keeps trying to explain that shooting Vidya was an "accident", Adi won't have it. He asks his dad what Gaurav could possibly have done that made him deserving of death and tells him that he used to think that Gaurav was responsible for the ill will between him and his dad but know he thinks it was mostly dad's fault. Adi's disenchantment with his dad is an interesting and long-awaited development and perhaps it will pave the way for him to accept Priya's truth.

Precap: Bhrama tells Deyvani that he won't go to jail and she should say exactly what he tells her to say--that the shooting was an accident. Deyvani asks him why she would want to protect him.

Gaurav reveals that Bhrama shot Vidya

Yet another drama filled episode--this week is gearing up to be great.

Vidya gets taken to the hospital and the whole family finds out and rushes there. While they're waiting for Vidya's mother to arrive and donate blood, Adi asks how this happened and who shot Vidya. Gaurav reveals the truth that the person who shot Vidya was none other than their own father, Bhramanand Jhakkar. Everyone is, understandably completely shocked.




Tomorrow's Pre-cap: Gaurav reveals that the bullet was meant for him and that Bhrama wanted to kill him because he found out he was gay.

Mahaepisode: Brahma finds out Gaurav's secret and drama ensues

Ok, today's one-hour special episode was so full of drama that I don't know where to start:

Mantri Ji arrives at the Jhakkar residence intending to reveal Gaurav's sexuality to everyone. Meanwhile, her P.A. finds out that Gaurav's partner is none other than Karan--Mantri Ji's own son. He calls Mantri Ji and tells her to please not say anything to the Jhakkar's and come home where he will explain. However, Mantri Ji and SSP get into a huge fight and in anger she reveals the truth about Gaurav. SSP says that if he finds out that she lied, than he will kill her. She asks what he will do if he finds out that she told the truth. He says he will kill Gaurav. Vidya hears this and rushes to Gaurav's office, where she tells him that his life is in danger and he should go hide somewhere. Gaurav tells her not to worry and that he'll handle everything.

Karan decides that the only way to stop matters getting out of control is to go home and tell his mother the truth. He does so and Mantri Ji is distraught knowing that she has destroyed the life of her son's boyfriend and even put his life in danger.

SSP arrives at Gaurav's office and has a confrontation with him. Vidya comes in the middle and keeps trying to calm him down by telling him "Gaurav is completely normal... I'm his wife... who would know better than me?" But Gaurav cannot be calmed down and he tells his father "You have no right to interfere in my life. And as to your honor: What honor? All the women, and bribery and dishonesty.... SSP finally can take no more and attempts to shoot Gaurav. However, Vidya gets shot instead.

The question for Monday is: Will Vidya die? And if so, how will her sacrificing her life for him impact Gaurav and Karan's relationship?

Uttara Masi begins to see the true face of SSP

Today on Maryada:

Uttara Masi begins to see the true face of SSP. After the party that almost ended in disaster, SSP yells at Uttara and tells her that now he understands why her husband used to abuse her, and that she "deserves nothing but blows and curses". She asks him "If I am only deserving of abuse, then why were you showing me so much sympathy up till now?" Of course, he immediately backtracks and says that he didn't mean it, the words came out in anger.... but it looks like Uttara is finally beginning to wake up to reality.

I think the creatives are trying to redeem Uttara by showing that she was taken in by SSP and now that he's treating her badly (showing his true face) than she will wake up. While one can see Uttara being victimized, I feel that it is going to be very difficult to bring her character back into the viewers' good graces. No matter how badly her late husband treated her and how nice her brother-in-law was to her, what kind of a woman will have an affair with her sister's husband? How could she believe that a man who is willing to cheat on his wife with her own sister in the same house would truely treat her with respect and love? In my opinion, whatever happens to Uttara now is just the consequence of her own actions.

Mantri Ji is suspicious of Gaurav's sexuality!

Today on Maryada:

Mantri Ji (mantri is hindi for minister), the mother of Gaurav's boyfriend Karan, is beginning to get more and more suspicious of Gaurav's sexuality ever since her personal assistant told her that he overheard Gaurav on the phone mentioning that he's gay. She's hoping to use this information to embarrass SSP, but little does she know that Gaurav's partner is none other than her own son.

Her suspicions are heightened when she realizes that she's never seen Gaurav and his wife (Vidya) together. She also comes upon Karan and Gaurav talking--Karan is trying to discuss something and Gaurav is telling him that they shouldn't talk about it here. When he notices her presence, Karan swiftly changes the topic to business, but it won't be long before Mantri Ji finds out their secret.

I'm really liking the way the writers are dealing with the homosexuality issue and with Gaurav and Vidya's relationship. Gaurav doesn't come across as a bad guy, just someone who is trapped by a bad situation. He never wanted to marry Vidya and he feels bad that he hasn't been able to give her the love she deserves. Vidya is also a very sympathetic character, going through all the emotions that a wife would in this situation. At first she didn't understand, she didn't think there was anything wrong in Gaurav "loving" his friend, and didn't think that he could love him in the way that a husband loves his wife. When she understood, she was saddened and disgusted. Then she confronted her mother in law for lying to her and giving her false hope that Gaurav would come to love her in time, knowing that he could never love a woman romantically. Even Karan is mostly a sympathetic character. We can understand his jealousy of Vidya and wantingGaurav to be only with him. However, Karan's actions are not justified. For example, his betrayal of Gaurav by not telling him that Vidya's mother had called and Vidya was on her way back. His discussion with Vidya caused her to leave her in-laws and attempt suicide (he couldn't have known that was going to happen), but he shouldn't have lied to Gaurav in the first place.

The reveal to the parents should be interesting. Let's see what's in store!

Maryada 101

"Maryada: Lekin Kab Tak?" (Keeping To Our Limits: But Until When) is an Indian soap opera that airs daily on Star Plus (a Hindi channel). It is set in Haryana, a state in northwestern India, which is one of the most conservative in the country. The show revolves around the family of Senior Superintendent of Police Brahmanand Jhaakar. The main characters are Brahma's wife Deyvani, her sister Uttara, and the family's two daughters-in-law Priya and Vidya. The show focuses on the stories of these four women revealing the hypocrisy behind what looks like the perfect family.

The highlights of the plot so far:

• Brahma attempted to rape Priya, who later turned out to be his son's fiancee. When he didn't manage to call off the wedding, Brahma threatened Priya saying that if she ever tells anyone what happened, he will ruin her life. He didn't hesitate to send his own son Aditya (Priya's husband) to jail just to show what he could do.
• Brahma is having an affair with Uttara, his sister-in-law, whom he manipulated into thinking that Deyvani didn't treat him properly. Priya told Deyvani about this, but it is difficult for Deyvani to break her habit of keeping silent and protecting her family's image and her place in society.
• Brahma and Deyvani's first born son, Gaurav, is gay and in a relationship with Karan, his best friend and the son of a prominent politican in the town. To protect Gaurav's secret from Brahma, Devyani got him married to Vidya, an innocent village girl. When Vidya found out her husband was gay, she went back to her parent's home. However, she couldn't tell her parents the real reason that she left her in-laws and her father forcibly sent her back to her in-laws. Being unable to go back home and not wanting to go back to her in-laws, Vidya attempted to commit suicide by drowning herself, but was saved by Priya's brother Cheenu, who is a doctor in a an army camp. Word of her location got to her in-laws, and Deyvani came to take her back home. However, the twist is that she has realized that marrying Vidya to a gay man was unfair to her and she tells her "I'm taking you home not to save your marriage but to break it."
